For many years I've been fascinated and inspired by many great artists and inventors of our times.
In my quiet world of mystery I often seek answers to greatest questions -There is times I look for light in the darkest
and deepest tunnels of the unknown.

It was about 2 years ago while searching online for answers to what I thought must be already possible
I came across video showing antigravity effect created by inventor John Hutchison. Without any doubt in my mind
I knew this is what I've been looking for as it simply confirmed my basic knowledge that all things are possible.
From that moment I wanted to understand what is causing the antigravity effect. I contacted John and was
genuinely surprised that I got his reply as I assumed person responsible for such discovery must be very
well known all over world and I wasn't mistaken of course. I stayed intouch with John and continued
to learn about him and his fascinating world of antigravity.

In 2007 I traveled to Canada to stay with my Polish relatives for Christmas, I could not pass the possibility of visiting John Hutchison
since he lived not far away from my family's hometown. In great spirit of discovery I finaly met with John!!
Me and My uncle were allowed to see the place where all the great mystery took place, we went inside Johns condominium
which honestly looked more like a submaribe relic or prehistoric spaceship. Fascinated and curious we kept bombarding
John with series of questions trying to utilize this unique opportunity and grasp as much information as we could
After over an hour I truly felt like I have a new friend! We finaly asked John to show us the actual effect
not realy expecting he will do it for us but he did...

Slightly fearful and more curious than wise I stood on the "observation deck" of the lab looking at the "target area" - a table carrying variety of metal and non metal objects (in short description) John powered on his mysterious "time machine" and controlled the experiment from another room. Me and my uncle continued to observe and videotape the table. Not told what realy pay attention to we noticed
variety of effects and movements of objects inside the dedicated room - I observed strong movements of equipment array hung
above the table as well as aluminium foil wich twisted itself up and down I noticed strange vibrations affecting some
objects on the table. At the end of the demonstration I felt that this energy field somehow touched me as well.

The story from that day got truly complicated for me as I have been affected by the most strange and powerful force that John generated using primitive by todays standards radio equipment. The next several weeks after the visit have become my greatest fight for live and recovery from what I named timeshift experience. I now know that the true mystery is within ourselfs and how we see this world is only up to us, I learned to pay much greater respect to God and to praise his allmighty will and supreme power over my own wishes and desires this experience has a symbolic meaning to me, I'm convinced that we are the tools in hands of God.

I learned that John Hutchison is a very gifted inventor and discoverer with an artistic and child like ability to see what most people are not able to even pay attention to. He is a very good friend who has the spirit knowledge and the ability to create the impossible
I believe he requires MUCH greater attention of the world his discoveries are the platform for the most amazing technologies
that we have dreamed of.

When reading some of the stories about Nikola Tesla and how often witnessing people ignored his revolutionary experiments at that time or how many times he has been missunderstood and punished by cruel world of monetary domination I deeply wonder about how much longer will it take for humanity to recognize those who are in fact
build this world. Those people and the impact they create are truly dependant on us and our ability to
recognize it.

I was just at John's apt/laboratory with a camera crew for new TV series i'm co-producing and hosting. We shot for over 7 hours, in High Def, and captured some extraordinary footage.

You may ask about the HGH bottle that floated in the air for the better part of 20 min. It was constant and controlled.....stunning...:)

It seemed to have 'over-driven' some of the components, I'm not sure if that is a common problem...

Your description (below) sounds absolutely remarkable.

I would very sincerely ask you to document EVERY aspect of the experience to the best of your ability - in writing would be the best, although if you'd like to schedule some time for an audio interview I could record (you have a show as well, but there might be some advantage to a targeted recording for posterity). For instance, Harold Berndt noticed a buzzing-noise like an over-driven tube-resonance right before the event he witnessed last year - a small detail that may offer us a scientific explanation, and I suspect there may be several things like this that you might not remember noticing even a month or two from now. I'm also incredibly relieved that you got this footage on tape.

Historically speaking, the problem with Hutchison has been the following:

1. Skeptics questioning the intelligence & credibility of people witnessing the effect.
2. The claim that Hutchison is "psychic" and the effect is thus irreproducible.
3. The claim that Hutchison is performing a hoax (by tipping the room upside down, hidden wires, etc)

The "psychic" or "PK" claim has been the most insidious & pervasive: it was first listed as a possibility by John Alexander, but subsequently picked up by other scientists as evidence to explain away a series of anomalies that appeared to threaten the existing paradigm of many people's scientific knowledge. In reality Hutchison's work threatens nothing, and offers a lot of potential, but psychologically this explanation has become a tool for the scientific community to assuage their guilt at having no ready explanation for the effect.

What's REALLY needed (in your documentary, hopefully), are observers who will come forward and sincerely testify about what they've seen in an accurate manner. John Alexander has done this effectively & fairly in past programs, despite never having reportedly seen the effect himself. However, most documentaries are entirely 3rd person, and it would help very much to build public interest if you could speak in a personal manner about your experience studying the paranormal and what it leads you to believe about what you've seen.

I'd like to say three things for the record on this:

First, there are a number of possible avenues for understanding how the Hutchison Effect works, and I believe all of them will lead us to an array of remarkable new technologies. While many scientists and inventors have explored a few of these in the past, Hutchison has never had the full financial & scientific apparatus to conduct a real research effort. My own belief is that with adequate infrastructure in place, it should be possible to fully harness this effect and integrate it into today's science in a beneficial manner.

Second, while John has been the victim of small minds and some irrational fear by agencies like the Canadian EPA, I do NOT believe that he has been the victim of a conspiracy to suppress his work. However, I am completely convinced that nagging doubts and a lack of understanding by the establishment has allowed this remarkable effect to "fall through the cracks" and prevent it from receiving the rigorous study that it otherwise would.

Third, Hutchison's work continues to receive interest at the highest levels of government and academia, but several groups that I'm acquaintanced with have expressed fear that they may ruin their own reputations by investing in such an unknown phenomenon. This fear is greatly compounded by several ignorantly skeptical comments that continue to circulate.

It is because of these factors that I believe what you've already accomplished has TREMENDOUS value in terms of helping to keep the Hutchison Effect in the public spotlight and encourage public interest in what may one day lead to full-fledged scientific investigation. To date, I've found that everyone with any real knowledge of this effect and it's history does not dispute that it occurs, and while there are many different speculations on the cause, I hope that your work is yet another block in the foundation of credibility that will help John's work to change our world in a positive way.

Hang on there, skeptical scientists have just dangled a rope to hang themselves with. On an entirely different subject matter I might add. But nonethles it's there.

They claim that the Hutchison effect is due to Mr Hutchison being a psychic. This therefore means that the scientists who state this are clearly admitting that psychic phenomena can exert a force capable of moving objects.

They have just admitted that paranormal effects are real. HUNG!

When I was at John's I had my own detection equipment which provided among other things, some interesting data on the nature of the interaction of the RF fields which seems to be the catalyst for the effect.

Introduction

It is almost impossible to examine this most bizarre phenomenon in isolation because it contains many elements common to a wide range of paranormal events. However, as we will soon see, quite apart from sharing many of the same parameters, when one examines the implications there might yet be a plausible answer in terms of particle physics. Curiously, the corroboration for these theories appears to come from sources not normally associated with science or scientific methodologies. Hopefully, some of the points raised in the course of this article may cause the reader to re-evaluate traditional ideas on certain aspects of mediumship and the paranormal in general. While it is not my intention to cause offence to anyone with religious sensibilities, given the nature of the subject I am forced to confront and question certain aspects of conventional religious doctrine where it runs contrary to the thrust of this article.

Now You See It, Now You Don’t

The ‘apports’ phenomenon

In purely spiritualist terms, the term ‘apport’ is given to any object that appears spontaneously in the course of a séance. Normally, each apport should have specific meaning to one or more sitters at the séance and they are intended to demonstrate the reality of contact with the afterlife in a tangible manner. The objects are normally small, e.g. brooches, pebbles or buttons etc, but irrespective of what the objects may be, they manifest instantaneously in the séance room and appear to travel through solid matter to get there. In some instances they fall with a thud upon the floor or table, in others they appear to drift down as if virtually weightless, than gain weight quite quickly. In many cases they are warm, (up to 40 degrees Centigrade) to the touch, certainly much warmer than the normal ambient temperature of the séance room. If this phenomenon occurred in isolation it would be reasonable to assume it was solely an adjunct of spiritualist phenomena, but it does not, it has parallels right across the entire paranormal/UFO spectrum.

The Philadelphia Experiment

There are specific links between instances of poltergeist manifestations, metal bending, the hotly debated ‘Hutchison Effect’ and especially, alleged ‘teleportation’. Although each of these phenomena can be examined individually, eventually, investigation reveals to a greater or lesser degree inescapable similarities between them all. In the case of

poltergeist activity the apports tend to be thrown around with considerable violence while other objects move around quite gently. Loud noises and bangs also occur and in some cases voices are heard. Instances of metal bending usually involve the participation, voluntary or otherwise, of a human agency. Although there are claims of controlled experiments proving the reality of this phenomenon, there is still widespread scepticism about both it and those claiming the ability. Although there are high profile luminaries like Uri Geller who apparently demonstrate this ability at will, it should be remembered that he is

primarily a professional showman, conjuror and mentalist who makes his living performing such feats and this should always be born in mind.

While still on the subject of alleged teleportation, ‘The Philadelphia Experiment’ and what actually happened on August the 12th 1943 to the ‘USS Eldridge’ during wartime experiments to create radar invisibility have become mired in lies, myth, misinformation and just possibly somewhere in this confusion, a glimmer of truth. Did the ship suddenly become invisible at the Philadelphia naval yards and simultaneously appear at the navy yards at Norfolk, Virginia several thousand miles away? Other claims relating to this experiment made by survivors, Al Bielek and Carl Allen, (sometimes called Carlos Allende), suggest that some of the crewmen aboard the Eldridge had simply vanished upon its return, while others suffered from acute psychiatric problems in the aftermath and incredibly, some died after becoming fused into the steelwork of the ship. Despite a series of books and still ongoing speculation about the subject, there have been consistent denials issued by the US Government regarding both the ship and the alleged experiment. In spite of, and indeed perhaps because of the dogged, official refutations, as with similar incidents, Roswell and Rendlesham are two of the best known; the story simply will not go away. However, recent claims emerging from Canada indicate that perhaps the mythology surrounding The Philadelphia Experiment and its aftermath contains more than a grain of truth.

The Hutchison Effect

‘The Hutchison Effect’ is another area of research consistently met with absolute and steadfast denial by the US authorities, even when such information is requested under the US FOIA (Freedom of Information Act). This famous and contentious enigma involves an accidental discovery made by Canadian researcher John Hutchison indicating that anomalous magnetic fields can and do cause items to spontaneously levitate. Another bizarre manifestation of this effect containing more than a hint of The Philadelphia Experiment indicates that some apparently totally incompatible items like straw and steel became fused seamlessly into one another as though the molecular bonds cementing each item together suddenly became permeable and allowed them to merge. This curious effect is

supposedly attained using inter-modulated electromagnetic fields at domestic currents and voltages of, 110V A/C at 13amps. If this account is indeed accurate, then what type of result was actually obtained on the Eldridge using considerably higher voltages and currents? Claims involving teleportation, i.e. an object disappearing in one location and re appearing in another, are the closest to apports in absolute terms and both sets of phenomena should conform to the same physical laws. Although various research establishments throughout the world are allegedly currently undertaking experimentation in techniques involving

teleportation, as yet there are no reported major breakthroughs except for some success in transmitting subatomic particles.

This however does not mean that other, more tangible results have not been achieved and immediately classified as would befit the clandestine nature of the military/industrial complex. Hutchison contacted both the US Army and the Canadian Government to have them evaluate his discovery and they responded by sending a team from the LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory) based in Albuquerque in New Mexico. The team arrived, made videotapes, took measurements and readings then left, and when Hutchison later attempted to obtain copy of the report under the US Freedom of Information Act, he was told by the US Army that the information was classified and the Canadian Government informed him it was ‘Not in the interests of national security’. This leads one to speculate that perhaps official attempts to replicate and reproduce at will what occurred to the USS Eldridge were not a complete success and perhaps Hutchison had inadvertently stumbled on one of the keys to unlocking the mystery of deliberate and controlled teleportation. In fact it later emerged during a lengthy correspondence, once again under the US FOIA,

relating to Hutchison’s claims between me and the US Army Intelligence Dept at Ft. Meade in Maryland USA, that they had unaccountably ‘lost’ the report, as indeed had the LANL. It also transpired that unknown to Hutchison an electrical engineer named George Hathaway who had assisted him over a considerable period was indirectly working for and paid by, US Army intelligence. This news took Hutchison completely by surprise because he had

trusted Hathaway implicitly. My enquiries also revealed that another ‘friend’ of Hutchison’s, John Anderson, who, at the time was supposedly assisting him through the jungle of red tape encountered in dealing with governmental departments was eventually exposed as a serving US army intelligence officer.

Into the Quantum World

As with apports, all the examples already mentioned involve, whether involuntarily or otherwise, the manipulation of electrical fields and sub atomic particles. The heating effect noticed in apports is an obvious sign that the atoms comprising the individual object have been excited to a high level and therefore heated prior to and during the process of transportation. It is therefore apparently necessary that each apport be broken down into its component particles in order to pass through solid walls on its way to the séance room. We should however bear in mind that metal heats in the presence of strong EM fields, a fact that is regularly exploited in industry. There is another possibility here though, is it also conceivable that rather than breaking the apport down, the frequency of the apport is altered allowing it to pass right through objects existing at different frequency? Since we and everything around us is composed of particles existing at a particular frequency, then for us they are solid and real. However, once the frequency of any given item be it animate or inanimate is altered to another state, then that object effectively becomes invisible and probably permeable. The best analogy is the use of ‘carrier waves’ in communications and radio propagation, where, once a base frequency is established, then it become possible to lock other harmonic signals e.g. ‘side bands’ to the base frequency (hence the term carrier). Is it then feasible that just as radio and television waves can penetrate the walls of a house, then material items can be broken down in terms of frequency and transmitted from one location to another, irrespective of whether one location exists in our physical plain or not. Another factor to take into account is that by rendering any object into its component particles it has to be reassembled in the same manner and more importantly in the correct order, so in effect the device used to dismantle the object has to retain the structure of that object in its ‘memory’ in order to correctly reassemble it elsewhere.

The Spiritual Dimension

Whatever the physical mechanism behind it, if the apports phenomenon is being driven by non-corporeal entities then what possible type of technology is used here, one thing is certain, Isaac Newton’s traditional laws of physics cannot apply here. Mediums and psychics appear to accept this phenomenon as a matter of course without considering its

implications, for this factor more than anything else shows clear similarities with the manner in which UFO’s seem to appear instantaneously and disappear in an identical manner. It also shares the same attributes observed during alleged abduction scenarios when the abductor is able to enter rooms directly through the walls and the abductee is floated out through closed windows and walls into a waiting spacecraft. Once again, solid objects present no obvious barrier to either the abductors or their victims. In addition, this is of course an attribute associated with ghosts and apparitions.

A five-year- long series of experiments conducted by the Scole Group near Diss in Norfolk, England may help explain what is happening here. During this time, the group with the aid of their ‘spirit team’ were able to conduct several controlled and witnessed exercises in creating pictures and text on Polaroid and

conventional film. A series of interesting and intriguing videotapes were made, voice communication occurred and several apports were received. According to the records of the Scole Group, the ‘spirit team’ consists of discarnate intelligences and scientists who have died in this reality and moved on to another energy state. The desire to continue in their chosen discipline does not necessarily vanish because the host body dies, therefore they were apparently able to assist in the design of a device allowing direct voice communication with them, this proved to be a species of crystal set. It should be stressed here that once consciousness is set free from the body it still possesses free will, and the spirit team assisting the Scole Group did so entirely by choice. Another rather more worrying point to emerge from the project was not only the realisation that we are surrounded by a series of additional dimensions, but that each contains entities, many of whom can move freely between them and some of them are openly hostile towards us. This discovery appears to corroborate a recent conclusion from quantum physics stating that in order for

‘string theory’ to function there has to be a series of additional dimensions. It also serves to give credence to another, more fundamental aspect of particle physics saying that sub-atomic particles can exist in more than one state at any given time, in other words they may exist simultaneously in more than one location and not necessarily in this reality. Furthermore, it also strongly suggests that the entities from these alternate realities may be the occupants of the UFO’s we occasionally encounter here on earth.

However, does this indicate that those on the ‘other side’ who wish to give a personal token to the living in the form of an apport, are able to manipulate matter at will? Is it conceivable that once freed from our bodies and returned to

pure energy states, we all have the ability to manipulate subjective reality by

using an utterly new type of non-physical technology? If this is the case, then a profound understanding of the theory and practical applications of particle physics is necessary, or perhaps the same physical and non-physical laws simply do not apply. However, there is yet other aspects of this enigma and these are the claims made over the centuries for the miracles allegedly performed by a series of holy men and women; the Christian saints. Some of the claims made on behalf of these remarkable people are simply incredible, particularly those of spontaneous levitation and bi-location. These claims highlight the fact that if genuine, then the ability to bypass the laws of physics is far from new, although it still gives no clues regarding how it is achieved other than an vague, obsessive desire to please and appease ‘God’ and depending on the nature of ‘God’, perhaps part of the answer lies here.

Perhaps what we see here is clear evidence that God is not sentient in any meaningful sense and perhaps what mankind has worshipped for millennia is in fact an all pervasive energy field that can be contacted at an unconscious level and converted into usable energy; in effect the real power of prayer. It is often said that illnesses and disasters have been alternately cured, avoided or averted by the use of prayer, but always at the whim of God. Is it possible that what is achieved has nothing to do with a third party and purely by an act of will? Following on from this, is it likely that those holy people who were bodily lifted from the ground or appeared simultaneously in two or more places had unwittingly tapped into a source of spiritual energy and were using it in a reflexive and uncontrolled manner?

From what we have seen, there is an obvious need to examine the current state of science and technology but there is an equally pressing need to study spiritual development, belief and the enhancement of consciousness, for until we can confront our own fears and superstition it is doubtful that we will ever fully understand the nature of the power around us.

It was a great time with you in good old New Westminster.

I have reached home fine with the samples you made for us and am now experimenting with them.

The big one in a platic container about the size of an old film can is the best performer. Around .55 Volt and up to .15 mA. Another big one in a small silver plated pipe with a brass rod in the middle is having .15 Volt and give .01 mA. With a load of 50 kOhm the power slowly drops. The ones in the gun shells and in the cigarette filter I have not tested to much, but I have now set up nice measuring units that take long and accurate readings. I am now getting ready to activate the ones that give now volt at the moment (about half of the samples)

Some questions:

How do I do the activation on the ones with nearly no volt. In case of the cigarette filters there is no second wire so I have to contact them as well. Should I press a wisker or probe pin onto the cristlin substance.

Hope to chat with you about the Hutchison Batteries some more soon.

Interesting! When the sun hit the batteries, the one in see through plastic, the power went way up, triple the value!

Hey hope all is well, just thinkin there may be a coincidence with the trees dying off a few years ago behind your building and last year they are dying off in front of your and my building which is particularly prominent with a birds eye view of the usually indestructible junipers dead and part dead. some of the plants in my home have behaved strangely too which i never mentioned to you before. the jasmines on occasion suddenly had completely dead and dried up leaves as did the avocados, which prior to the last few years has never happened to me before. also my big rosemary bush on the balcony corner croaked last spring. also there are cracks in the walls of each room which look like a strange pressure or wave effect results. also for a while i was plagued with fishtanks mysteriously leaking or cracking accross the bottom corners. also there were so many leaks (6+ in my suite alone) in my buildings metal pipes that they drilled and pulled them all out. i happen to have one of the drilled out cores and the rebar in it looks aged on one side and somewhat eliptical - there are many left in the basement of my bldg managers storage. if there is some time when you think i may be better off not being home just call me, dont have to mention that, and i will leave. you can visit if you'd like to, just calxxxxxxxxxxxx and leave a message with your callback number as i lost my phone book. health, wealth, happiness,

The Hutchison Effect -- An Explanation
by Mark A. Solis

People often ask, "What exactly is the Hutchison Effect?"
This brief essay is an attempt to answer that question to the satisfaction of the majority.
First of all, the Hutchison Effect is a collection of phenomena which were discovered accidentally by John Kenneth Hutchison
during attempts to study the longitudinal waves of Tesla back in 1979. In other words, the Hutchison Effect is not simply a
singular effect. It is many.
The Hutchison Effect occurs as the result of radio wave interferences in a zone of spatial volume encompassed by high
voltage sources, usually a Van de Graff generator, and two or more Tesla coils.
The effects produced include levitation of heavy objects, fusion of dissimilar materials such as metal and wood (exactly
as portrayed in the movie, "The Philadelphia Experiment"), the anomalous heating of metals without burning adjacent material,
spontaneous fracturing of metals (which separate by sliding in a sideways fashion), and both temporary and permanent changes
in the crystalline structure and physical properties of metals.
The levitation of heavy objects by the Hutchison Effect is not---repeat not---the result of simple electrostatic or
electromagnetic levitation. Claims that these forces alone can explain the phenomenon are patently ridiculous, and easily
disproved by merely trying to use such methods to duplicate what the Hutchison Effect has achieved, which has been well
documented both on film and videotape, and has been witnessed many times by numerous credentialed scientists and engineers.
Challengers should note that their apparatus must be limited to the use of 75 Watts of power from a 120 Volt AC outlet, as
that is all that is used by Hutchison's apparatus to levitate a 60-pound cannon ball.
The fusion of dissimilar materials, which is exceedingly remarkable, indicates clearly that the Hutchison Effect has a
powerful influence on Van der Waals forces. In a striking and baffling contradiction, dissimilar substances can simply "come
together," yet the individual substances do not dissociate. A block of wood can simply "sink into" a metal bar, yet neither
the metal bar nor the block of wood come apart. Also, there is no evidence of displacement, such as would occur if, for
example, one were to sink a stone into a bowl of water.
The anomalous heating of metal without any evidence of burning or scorching of the adjacent materials (usually wood)
is a clear indication that possibly the nature of heat may not be completely understood. This has far-reaching implications
for thermodynamics, which hinges entirely on the presumption of such knowledge. It should be noted that the entirety of
thermodynamics is represented by the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is insignificant in a context
of 0 Hz to infinite Hz. The anomalous heating exhibited by the Hutchison Effect shows plainly that we have much to learn,
especially where thermodynamics and electromagnetism meet.
The spontaneous fracturing of metals, as occurs with the Hutchison Effect, is unique for two reasons: (1) there is no
evidence of an "external force" causing the fracturing, and (2) the method by which the metal separates involves a sliding
motion in a sideways direction, horizontally. The metal simply comes apart.
Some temporary changes in the crystalline structure and
physical properties of metals are somewhat reminiscent of the "spoon bending" of Uri Geller, except that there is no one near
the metal samples when the changes take place. One video shows a spoon flapping up and down like a limp rag in a stiff breeze.
In the case of permanent changes, a metal bar will be hard at one end, like steel, and soft at the other end, like powdered
lead. Again, this is evidence of strong influence on Van der Waals forces.
The radio wave interferences involved in producing these effects are produced from as many as four and five different
radio sources, all operating at low power. However, the zone in which the interferences take place is stressed by hundreds
of kilovolts.
It is surmised by some researchers that what Hutchison has done is tap into the Zero Point Energy. This energy gets
its name from the fact that it is evidenced by oscillations at zero degrees Kelvin, where supposedly all activity in an
atom ceases. The energy is associated with the spontaneous emission and annihilation of electrons and positrons coming
from what is called "the quantum vacuum." The density of the energy contained in the quantum vacuum is estimated by some at
ten to the thirteenth Joules per cubic centimeter, which is reportedly sufficient to boil off the Earth's oceans in a
matter of moments.
Given access to such energies, it is small wonder that the Hutchison Effect produces such bizarre phenomena. At the
present time, the phenomena are difficult to reproduce with any regularity. The focus for the future, then, is first to
increase the frequency of occurrence of the effects, then to achieve some degree of precision in their control.
The work is continuing at this time. Before long, we shall see what progress can be made.

John Kenneth Hutchison of Vancouver, Canada, tinkered with an array of simultaneously interactive fields; a combination of electrostatic, magnetic, microwave and Tesla Coil fields. Without predictable warning and with some randomness, these fields interacted with objects. Levitations, thrusted weights, glowing, apparent softening and bending of hard metal alloys, and strange alloy separations were some of the phenomena reported. Some events were witnessed and reported by George Hathaway." Additional details of the experiments are related in the Electric Spacecraft journal. One series of experiments was performed while observers from Los Alamos Laboratory, U. S. aircraft firms, and military personnel observed and made video camera recordings. There is no doubt that things happened which were dffficult to explain. However, the experimental procedures were such that John Kenneth Hutchison would try various combinations of pulsed power, microwaves, etc., without records to correlate what caused what. The best that could be done at the time was to observe. There is no claim of electrogravitic forces here, but massive objects were said to have moved, presumably as a result of the externally applied fields. Mr. Hutchison claimed that the presence of heavy masses was important in his levitation experiments. The phenomenon generated by Mr. Hutchison requires more investigation.

THE HUTCHISON EFFECT: A LIFT, DISRUPTION AND LUMINOUS ENERGY SYSTEM The original way that Hutchison set out his range of apparatus was, by industrial standards, primitive and crowded, with poor connections and hand-wound coils. But it was with this layout with its erratic standards that he obtained most of the best examples of objects levitating, despite the fact that the maximum power drawn was 1.5 kilowatts, and this from the ordinary power sockets of the house mains. The Hutchison device produces effects which can basically be divided into two categories, propulsive and energetic. It can induce lift in objects made of any material and also propel them laterally. It has been noted that there are four types of trajectory that affect objects weighing a few pounds, and all of these upward movements begin with a twisting spiral movement. Also, there has to be a particular geometry in relation to the direction of gravity, i.e., downwards of these objects, for them to be affected in this way. Some objects will not take off if you turn them on their sides, but will if you stand them on their ends. It is evident, therefore, that the relationship of their physical forms to the fields which swirl invisibly around them is important. Returning to the four modes of trajectory, first, there is the looping arc, where objects take off relatively slowly over a period of seconds, loop in the air and fall back to earth; then there is the ballistic take-off where objects shoot upwards suddenly, hit the ceiling and fall back down. A third type of trajectory is a powered one where there appears to be a continuous lifting force; and the fourth is where an object moves upwards and just hovers for some time. As mentioned, these objects can be of any material whatsoever & emdashwood, plastics, copper, zinc, Styrofoam, etc. It must be mentioned that 99 per cent of the time the objects do nothing at all, and one can wait for days before anything happens, but it is just this erratic unpredictability that one finds when investigating poltergeist activity. Another major area of activity is the disruptive phenomenon where materials are destroyed. Hutchison has a collection of metal samples which have been broken and/or deformed, indicating that high energy levels are involved, as mentioned before. As one may imagine, this device has attracted intense interest from a variety of professional, academic and industrial sources, not to mention covert military attention. In the USA, a respected and well-qualified electrical engineer, George Hathaway, has taken on the research and development of the device. As explained, although the device has many interrelated parts, it acts as a single entity. Of the disruptive effects on metals and other materials he relates: "The disruption part of this...system has produced confirmatory physical samples that include water, aluminum, iron, steel, molybdenum, wood, copper, bronze, etc... We have tested various pieces that have broken apart, for hardness, ductility, etc. We have used optical and electron microscopes. "Two samples of aluminum... one of which is twisted up in a left-handed spiral...and another which was blown into little fibres...molybdenum rods which are supposed to withstand temperatures of about 5,000 degrees F... We watched these things wiggle back and forth... In general, a collection of pieces of metal shows that they have been blasted apart or twisted..." In domestic settings where 'poltergeist' activity is usually observed, metal-bending and deformities take place with less vigour&emdashwhich is to be expected due to the accidental field configurations produced as electromagnetic pollution from power lines, radio transmitters, civilian radar, etc., interacts with Earth energies&emdash otherwise known as geomagnetic and geoelectric fields&emdashat locations inadvertently built over fault lines. The following example taken from a well-known case in the UK&emdashthe Enfield poltergeist & emdashshows a typical instance of metal- bending: "It was 10.15 am on 6 December 1977. Janet was leaning on the kitchen worktop, and her mother was sitting down. Both were out of reach of the stove. Suddenly, they both heard a noise coming from the teapot&emdashthe same metal one that Grosse had seen rocking in front of his eyes. Mrs Harper picked up the pot and found that its stout metal lid had arched upwards, just as the spoons had done, bending right out of shape so that it no longer fitted the pot. I took the lid in both hands, and even using considerable force I was unable to bend it back." Hathaway, in his descriptions of metal deformity, clearly gives the impression of intense energies at work: "The largest piece [of metal] is about 12-13 inches long. It's two inches in diameter, of regular mild steel, and a 3/8 of an inch long part was blasted off the end and crumbled like a cookie." However, even the domestic 'poltergeist' displays phenomena where extremely high energy levels are involved, although in the following example, also from the Enfield case, we get the impression that more conventional high-magnetic-field densities are involved: "Mr Playfair...was already on his feet and standing in the doorway of their bedroom, wondering if he was seeing things. "The entire iron frame of the gas fire had been wrenched out of the wall, and was standing at an angle on the floor, still attached to the half-inch-diameter brass pipe that connected it to the mains. The pipe had been bent through an angle of thirty-two degrees. This was a major demolition job, for the thing was cemented into the brickwork, and it was out of the question to suggest that one of the children could have wrenched it out. When we finally dismantled the whole apparatus, we found it quite a job even to move. It must have weighed at least fifty pounds."3 We may ask ourselves what new directions for investigation into 'poltergeists' are open to us in the light of the Hutchison Effect. Startling as it may seem, an answer is there ready-made for us in the almost matter-of-fact information that Hathaway supplies: "Fragments have been analyzed and found to have an anomalously high silicon content, although the original material was not silicon steel...a standing piece is 5-6 inches tall, 1 and 1/4 inches in diameter and is a piece of case-hardened steel... The case-hardening has been blown off at the top and about 3/4 of an inch of it vaporized during an experiment...a piece of iron was analyzed for composition which showed anomalously high amounts of copper...wood particles were also found inside a piece of aluminum..." Evidently, the energies involved are able to reorganize materials in a way that is virtually impossible by any other means, but we are now provided with a previously unheard-of perspective. From the Hutchison experiments, it is clear that an analysis of the composition of metals at the 'poltergeist' site, in order to detect similar mixture-anomalies, is an essential investigative procedure. Although we may shelve theories of psychokinesis and separate them out from 'poltergeist' activity as belonging to dice-throwing experiments or the spoon-bending of Uri Geller, the weird physical antics of the mixing and matching fields of the Hutchison Effect provide us with something far stranger. This underscores the point made earlier that although it sounds as if the enigma of the 'poltergeist' is being diminished by identifying it as electromagnetic field activity, in actual fact the mystery is merely being redirected. Physicists and electrical engineers should now reconsider the nature of severely modulated electromagnetic fields, for there are evidently previously unrealized potentials. The energies involved in the Hutchison Effect are clearly the same ones at work during 'poltergeist' activity, and it is only the ignorance and entrenched positions of the psychical research fraternity that prevent them from accepting these insights into electromagnetic energy potentials. These energies include weird thermal effects. During Hutchison's experiments, flames have been produced and emitted from blocks of concrete, and fires have broken out in different parts of the building where the device was housed. Again, these effects are typical of 'poltergeist' reports. On one occasion, a steel file was held in place against a wooden board by two plywood struts, to prevent it taking off. The file glowed white-hot, but the board when examined afterwards was not even singed. Such mischievous thermal antics of 'phantom arsonists' have been attributed to the 'spirit energy of the poltergeist', whatever that may be, but Hathaway's warnings are more to do with effective safety practices in the laboratory: "From time to time there are scorch marks on the boards from other experiments. The apparatus makes fire spontaneously in parts of the lab, if you're not careful." The device can also induce unusual aurora-like lighting effects in mid-air. Once when Hutchison was filming in 1981, a sheet of iridescence suddenly descended between the camera and some of the hardware being used. It had a strange pinkish center to it, and after it hovered there for a short period it vanished just as suddenly as it had appeared. Hutchison actually thought he had been hallucinating, but when the film was developed it transpired that there had actually been something objective there. Once again, the Enfield case provides us with comparable examples of strange, luminous phenomena in a domestic setting, and in this extract they are accompanied by other typical phenomena also explainable within the Hutchison Effect: "The Harpers hoped to find some peace and quiet in the Burcombes' house, but it was not to be. From the kitchen Sylvie suddenly let out a piercing scream and dropped the kettle she was holding. It was some time before she could calm down enough to describe what had happened. 'I was just pouring the water from the kettle into the teapot,' she said, 'when something appeared right in front of my eyes and then dropped onto the kitchen unit top, and bounced once.' It was a plastic rod, about six inches long, from one of the children's toy sets. 'I sort of looked down, opened my eyes, and this thing was in front of me,' she told Grosse when he arrived shortly afterwards. 'I screamed, shouted and jumped back, and after I jumped back I saw the thing jump and come up again.' "Grosse questioned Mrs Burcombe very carefully about this incident, which seemed to be a genuine case of one of the rarest of all psychic phenomena: materialization. The plastic rod had definitely not been thrown at her, she insisted. It had just appeared in front of her eyes and dropped down... But he had already seen too much, in both his own and his sister's homes. He had watched open-mouthed as a lamp slowly slid across a table and fell to the floor, vibrating violently. He had seen a drawer open by itself. He had felt an invisible force stop him closing his own bedroom door, which simply stuck half-closed though it normally swung shut on its own. And he had seen something far more alarming as he stood one day at the bottom of the Harper's staircase, looking up it. 'I saw this light,' he said. 'It was the equivalent, I should say, of twelve inches vertical. It looked like a fluorescent light behind frosted glass, which burned fiercely and gradually faded away'..."4 With the insights gained from what is possible during operation of the Hutchison device, coupled with my own findings that 'poltergeist' activity takes place at locations that are electromagnetic hot-spots, we can begin to understand what is going on in such cases. Unusual light phenomena can occur, and on consulting Burke's Handbook of Magnetic Phenomena we find several mechanisms documented where magnetic fields interact with light to produce specific optical effects that are predictable in laboratory conditions, but are obviously most startling when they occur spontaneously in domestic settings. Having stated this, however, the sheet of iridescent light which appeared during Hutchison's experiments also came as an unexpected and surprising phenomenon. In the extract given above, it is not difficult to rethink the apparent materialization of the plastic rod as a typical trajectory of the Hutchison Effect, observed many times and recorded on video. Likewise, the lamp slowly sliding across the table and vibrating could have come straight out of the catalogue of effects similarly induced. In fact, compared with the extreme effects that Hutchison can obtain with his device, domestic 'poltergeist' phenomena which previously seemed so dramatic, now seem quite tame. But as already noted, this lessening of effect is consistent with the fact that the Hutchison device involves a concentrated collection of devices which appear to act as a single entity, whereas an electromagnetic hot-spot occurs by the chance juxtaposition of freak environmental field sources. Unfortunately, the investigators present during the 'poltergeist' activity at Green Street, Enfield, England, in the late 1970s, did not carry out a thorough field survey or identify the field sources involved, despite the fact that a magnetometer registered distinct deflections as objects were 'thrown' across the room. In fact, there is the distinct impression that, for them, electromagnetic fields were not a welcome explanation for the phenomena they witnessed, as the Playfair book relates how they discontinued use of the magnetometer once it showed that power surges occurred in conjunction with physical phenomena: "When everybody was settled into bed, we switched on both tape recorders, Eduardo's being connected to the signal from the magnetometer, and left the room, since I had told him that nothing would happen if we both stayed there. From the landing we could keep an eye on the dial of the machine, and in the following forty minutes Janet's pillow was twice thrown across the room just as it had been the previous evening in my presence. This time, of course, I could not see Janet, although Mrs Harper assured me at once that she had not thrown it. And each time the needle on the magnetometer did indeed deflect, though Eduardo thought this might have been caused by creaking bedsprings."5 It is difficult to understand how bedsprings could cause power surges strong enough to register on a magnetometer (I, myself, have used many types of these instruments during investigations), and even more difficult to understand how they could induce deflections which happened to coincide with the movements of objects. Also, it's a wonder the investigators did not eliminate this as an option, if they thought it was possible, by simply moving the instrument away from the bedsprings. Magnetometers are of course designed to withstand the effects of magnetic fields, and so it is even more puzzling why the following reasoning and actions were employed: "I was a little worried that he might have to go back to his university and report that the expensive instrument he had borrowed without permission had broken down, so we called off the experiment once we were satisfied that it seemed possible that there was some link between poltergeist activity and anomalous behavior of the surrounding magnetic field."6 One of the primary investigators of the Green Street 'poltergeist' in Enfield, North London, was Maurice Grosse, who has given many lectures on his experiences and is now regarded as one of the leading authorities on this kind of phenomenon. On the whole, 'poltergeists' are regarded as discarnate and mischievous entities who home in on the energies of an adolescent focus and who unintentionally wreak havoc wherever they go, although particular locations are usually favored for the most spectacular phenomena. In the course of my career as an investigator, I have discovered that 'poltergeist' activity takes place in electromagnetic hot- spots, and is electromagnetic in nature. However, 'poltergeist expert' Maurice Grosse takes a different view: "Albert's enthusiasm for his suppositions does him credit, but...displays a distinct lack of practical experience of psychic phenomena... I look forward with great interest to the day when flying boxes, stones, toys, heavy items of furniture, plus spontaneous fires and water phenomena, together with the passage of matter through matter, levitation, metal bending, to name just a few examples of poltergeist high jinks I have personally experienced, can be explained by electromagnetic and bioelectromagnetic activity."7 Well, Maurice, this is the day you have been waiting for! In fact, it was "the day" over 15 years ago when Guy Lyon Playfair's book on the Enfield 'poltergeist' was published in 1981 in the UK, when at the same time on the other side of the world in British Columbia, Canada, John Kenneth Hutchison's device was just getting underway and generating all of the physical 'poltergeist' activity you were considering. ELECTROMAGNETIC HYPERSENSITIVITY This is not the place to fully expound my own biological research into how the human body reacts to prolonged field exposure, except to say that the body eventually acts as an oscillator and can add to the electromagnetic mayhem generated at hot spots. That is to say, I would add to the Hutchison Effect by including my own findings, as outlined in my books, which point to 'poltergeists' being electromagnetic phenomena, and my conclusion that there is a bioelectromagnetic aspect where the human body behaves as another piece of electrical apparatus or hardware and re-radiates generalized ambient fields in more beam-like, coherent forms. This is a symptom of an increasingly common clinical condition known as electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EH), caused by exposure to electromagnetic pollution from power lines, transmitters, etc. The condition was the subject for an international conference of medical specialists and academics at Graz, Austria, in 1994. It is treated at the Breakspear Hospital in Hertfordshire, England. However, nobody in psychical research here in England seems to be aware of EH or the work of John Kenneth Hutchison, and there are fixed ideas which are protected with a religious fervor. Freak electromagnetic field conditions which seem to stretch the laws of physics to almost breaking point are not a welcome conclusion, although the history of science is littered with painful upheavals where the established view is turned on its head, and iconoclasts like myself and, unwittingly, John Kenneth Hutchison, threaten the status quo. For example, Dr John Beloff, the Editor of Anomaly, the respected journal of the Society of Psychical Research, wrote to me to tell me: "Whatever the relevance of exposure to EM radiation...it has no obvious bearing on psychic experiences in general." Having investigated reports of apparitions and 'poltergeists' in hot-spot locations for over three years, and measured the fields present with my trusty field meter, this statement made no sense at all. Perhaps the reader will have some inkling of the sort of establishment opposition I am up against, or may even refuse to believe the Hutchison Effect themselves. However, it must be remembered that a number of well-known electrical engineering organizations have been involved. For example, McDonnell-Douglas Aerospace and the Max Planck Institute in Germany, both took many photographs, some of which appear here. I anticipate that there will be a wave of controversy as a result of this article, if the reactions here in the UK are anything to go by, and I would be interested in any constructive suggestions that readers may have. It was very nice to chat with you on the phone and thanks for telling me a little bit about the history of your experiment. Thanks also for giving me all the wonderful websites along with all the contacts you had over the years. I talked to my supervisor and a few colleagues about your work last Friday, and the general feelings I got is that they were both excited and skeptical about the experiment. The exciting part comes from seeing the 70-lbs being levitated; the skeptical part comes from the fact that there was no patent number associated with your experiment, no journals reported, and no parties have attempted to duplicate your experiment in order to recreate the same results. Some of the guys also questioned about the upper part of the screen in the video because nothing it is not shown. Anyway, I will meet my director on Friday (July 30), and try to come up with a good story... If he likes it, he will present the idea to the NASA director at the Kennedy Space Center for approval. In order to clear up some "clouds", I wonder if you could help me to provide the following:

1) A brief written history that shows a little bit of the history in a chronological order of your work from 1970's to present days (you already told me on the phone but I hope you don't mind to give me something in written form). Please also add different parties (Los Alamos, Johnson Space Center, Japan, Germany, etc.) who already stopped by, visited, or expressed interest in your experiment, and the reason why they did NOT follow through. Please also tell me the current status of your equipments (do you still own 100% of all of your equipments or still need to purchase some additional things if the funding is approved). Do you still plan to file a patent or are you still working on it?

2) A brief diagram/sketch that shows the setup of the experiment--without giving away too much "secrets". For example, the sketch should show how large the steel ball is; what's on top; what's under; what kind of radio wave you put in, the position of the Tesla coil, things in that nature.

3) A brief description of the facility that would be suitable for you to perform the experiment successfully: What kind of requirements in terms of insulation, radiation susceptibility, etc. that you need to have, the ideal location, things in that nature.

Transmutation, The Alchemist Dream Come True
Not just base metals into gold; but the profuse creation of elements that is rewriting the book of genesis. Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

Cold fusion scientists have managed, not so much to transmute base metals into gold (although there have been unconfirmed reports to that effect), but more spectacularly, to make a whole range of elements on the lab bench, with equipment not much more sophisticated than what the ancient alchemists might have used. In the process, nuclear energy is released - safely and without toxic or radioactive wastes - that could be harnessed for heating or to generate electricity [1] (see From Cold Fusion to Condensed Matter Nuclear Science, SiS 36).

In addition, there is the attractive possibility of solving the world’s nuclear waste problem (see Box) by transmuting highly radioactive and toxic nuclear wastes from conventional nuclear reactors into safer non-radioactive elements [2].

The world’s nuclear waste problem
The most pressing nuclear waste problem is the high level radioactive waste produced by nuclear reactors. It contains nuclear fission products and transuranic elements (with atomic numbers greater than uranium) generated in the reactor core, which have half-lives greater than 20 years, in some cases thousands, or tens of thousands of years [3].

The US Environment Protection Agency recognizes the ionising radiation from nuclear wastes as a serious health hazard [4]. Acute exposures result in radiation sickness, burns, premature aging, or even death. Cancers and birth defects result from stochastic exposure. Some radioactive waste elements, such as U-238, are both radioactive and highly toxic. U-238 has a half-life of 4.5 billion years.

Nuclear wastes also constitute a major security concern, as they could be acquired by terrorist organisations or rogue nations and turned into nuclear weapons.

It is estimated that high level nuclear wastes is currently increasing by about 12 000 tonnes every year. Most of this waste is put into long-term storage after complicated treatments such as converting into glass or various concrete blocks. However, finding long-term storage sites that are safe and geologically stable remain a hot political issue in most countries.

Transmutations galore
Transmutation reactions come in two classes [5, 6]. The first class of reactions result in a large array of products with mass numbers spanning across the periodic table; these may involve the formation of a heavy compound nucleus that can decay and split into different elements (but see later). The second class of reactions give distinct, isolated products directly, without the compound nucleus intermediate.

These ‘cold’ or low energy transmutation reactions are remarkably easy to accomplish compared to the conventional ‘hot’ nuclear reactions that are supposed to take place in stars or supernova explosions, or else only at millions of degrees K.

By 2003, transmutation experiments have been studied in some detail by over 14 separate laboratories worldwide: Beijing University and Tsinghua University in China; Lab des Sciences Nucleaire in France; Frascati Laboratory and University of Leece in Italy; Hokkaido University, Mitsubishi Corporation, Osaka university, and Shizuoka University in Japan; SIA LUTCH, Tomsk Polytechnical University in Russia; Portland University USA, Texas A & M University, and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the USA [5].

The minimum requirement for transmutation is a metal hydride film or membrane loaded up with hydrogen or deuterium to a high level, and kept in constant flux [5-8]. Electrode materials have ranged from carbon, nickel, to uranium. The metal hydride can be loaded by electrolysis of water or heavy water using a thin film of the metal as cathode; or else deuterium gas can be made to diffuse through the metal membrane by injecting the gas on one side and evacuating from the other side [9]. But a wide variety of experimental conditions have been used to trigger or speed up the reactions, including surface plasma electrolysis, plasma discharge, laser initiation and external electric or magnetic fields.

George Miley’s team at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the United States is one of the main groups involved in transmutation [5]. They used multi-layer thin film nickel, palladium or titanium [6] coated by sputtering on polystyrene microspheres, and loaded up to a high level of hydrogen by packing the coated beads in the cathode of an electrolytic cell. The products of nuclear reaction were documented carefully with a combination of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and neutron activation analysis (NAA). SIMS detects most isotopes and is very sensitive but covers only a small area, typically a single microsphere, and is not very accurate. NAA on the other hand gives very accurate analysis of the entire electrode, but is restricted to detecting only certain elements. A combination of the two methods enabled the team to study a large number of isotopes. An overlap in the data set allowed a more accurate re-standardisation of the SIMS data to the more accurate NAA measurements.

A typical experiment is run continuously for 260 hours, resulting in a wide variety of elements. There are four high yield peaks in the atomic mass of 22-23, 50-80, 103-120 and 200-210. This pattern is generally consistent with results obtained by other research groups. Non-natural isotope distributions have been found for some elements, which is also a sign of nuclear reactions.

The most commonly reported elements are calcium, copper, zinc and iron. They were found in more than 20 different experiments. Forty percent of the least frequently observed elements were rare earths from the lanthanide group: lutetium, terbium praseodymium, europium, samarium, gadolinium, dysprosium, holmium, neodymium and ytterbium.

There were other effects associated with nuclear transmutation. These include energetic charged particles, protons (~1.6 MeV) and alpha (~16 MeV) emissions, and low level soft X-ray emissions. Excess heat was also produced simultaneously. Based on binding energy calculation, Miley concluded that the rate of transmutation correlates well with the excess power produced.

Transmutations have been obtained with both light and heavy water solutions, but heavy water appears to give a larger number of transmutation products under some conditions.

Direct transmutation of single elements
Yasuhiro Iwamura and colleagues at Mitsubishi’s Advanced Technology Research Center and colleagues have taken another approach to nuclear transmutation by concentrating on the direct transmutation of one element into another [10, 11].

They used D2 gas permeation through a sandwich of thin alternating layers of palladium (Pd) and CaO sitting on a bottom layer of bulk Pd. Permeation of deuterium is forced through the layers by exposing the top of the sandwich with a thin Pd film to D2 gas while the bottom is maintained under vacuum. On the D2 gas side, dissociative absorption causes the D2 molecules to separate into D atoms, which diffuse though the sandwich towards the vacuum side, where they emerge from the Pd metal, combine and are released as D2 gas (see Fig. 1). The element to be transmuted is deposited on the top Pd film of the Pd/CaO sandwich by electrolytic loading from a salt solution. Cesium (Cs), barium (Ba) and strontium (Sr) have been transmuted in this way. The analysis of elements was done in situ, without removing or disturbing the sandwich, using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) directed at the topside of the sandwich

A typical experiment lasts for about a week or two. Cs has been transmuted into praseodymium (Pr) reproducibly in more than 60 experiments. Sr was transmuted into molybdenum (Mo) in three experiments lasting two weeks, the resulting Mo differed in isotope composition from natural Mo.

Based on an analysis of the depth profile of Pr, it appears that a very thin surface region of up to 10 nanometres is the active transmutation zone.

In the experiment involving transmutation of Ba to Sm, different isotopes of Ba resulted in the correspondingly different isotopes of Sm. 138Ba transmuted into 150Sm, and 137Ba transmuted into 149Sm, the increase in atomic mass was 12 in both cases, and atomic number 6. In both the transmutation of Cs to Pr and Sr to Mo, the increase in atomic mass was 8, and atomic number 4.

The role of the CaO layer was revealed in an experiment in which Cs was transmuted to Pr [10]. In all three samples with the normal Pd/CaO sandwich, Pr was found as the end product, but not in an experiment without a CaO layer; nor in two experiments in which the CaO layer was replaced by MgO. The CaO layer appeared to increase the deuterium density 10-fold compared to palladium alone. The layer also has a very negative free energy, so that the transition metal Pd serves as a source of interface electrons to screen the positive charges of the deuterons from one another [12], thereby facilitating fusion and transmutation. It is thought that fusion may have occurred between deuterons to form helium, 4He2, which then further fuses with the heavier nuclei to give the end product.

Laurence Hecht, editor of 21st Century Science and Technology commented that Iwamra’s work implies a revolution in our understanding of the nucleus, a fundamental breakthrough in science, compared to which, practical applications, even one so necessary as a new supply of cheap, clean energy, is of secondary importance [13].

The most common products of conventional thermonuclear fusion are about 3 to 4 MeV, and that involves an enormous amount of energy input to accelerate apha particles to one-tenth the velocity of light. Iwamura’s transmutation yields 50 to 67 MeV, with the greatest of ease, or very little energy input by comparison.

Rewriting creation
Allen Widom at Northeastern University Boston and Lewis Larsen of Lattice Energy recently proposed a mechanism that could account for a wide range of fusion and transmutation reactions [7] (for an accessible account read How Cold Fusion Works [2], SiS 36). They suggested that the surface of metallic hydrides fully saturated with protons develop collective electron and proton surface plasma oscillations (plasmons) that enable the electrons to gain sufficient mass to be captured by protons resulting in ultra-low momentum neutrons. In a subsequent paper, they showed how these ultra-low momentum neutrons could be absorbed (captured) by heavier nuclei to produce new elements across the Periodic Table [14]. The expected chemical nuclear abundances resulting from such neutron absorption fit the available low energy transmutation experimental data quite well.

The important feature of such nuclear transmutations is that they do not need special mechanisms to penetrate the high Coulomb barrier, as proposed in other models.

First of all, the experimental distribution in atomic mass number A of the low energy nuclear reaction products measured in laboratory chemical cells are similar to the nuclear abundances found in our local solar system and galaxy. Furthermore, these maxima and minima in abundances resemble those predicted in the ultra-low momentum neutron absorption reaction cross-section (the likelihood of interactions), treating the neutron as a wave. Thus, it raises fundamental questions as to whether the conventional astrophysical account of how the elements are created in our stars and galaxies under thermonuclear conditions is correct.

The prediction based on treating the ultra-low momentum neutron as a wave results in a quasi-periodic curve: the peaks of reaction corresponds to the neutron wave fitting inside the spherical model potential wells of the nuclei, the radius of the well varying with atomic mass.

Data on the yields of transmutation product in an experiment using light water containing Li2SO4 in an electrolytic cell are plotted on the graph (see Figure 2). As can be seen, there is a reasonable correspondence between the experimental points and the predicted peaks and troughs of the neutron cross-section. The magnitude of the transmuted nuclear yields varies from one experimental run to another, but the agreement with the predicted curve remains over all experiments, and regardless of whether the electrode is titanium hydride, palladium hydride or layered Pd-Ni hydride.

When the neutron wavelength within the well reaches resonance with the radius of the well, a peak appears in the scattering strength. If we associate resonant couplings with the ability of the neutron to be virtually trapped in a region near the nucleus, then for intervals of atomic mass numbers around and under the resonant peaks, we could expect to obtain recently discovered neutron ‘halo’ nuclei (nuclei that have a clear separation between a normal core nucleus and a loosely bound low-density ‘halo’ of neutrons outside the core). The spherical potential well model predicts the stable regions for the halo nuclei and thus the peaks in observed nuclear transmutation abundances.

The neutrons yielding the abundances in our local solar system and galaxy have often been previously assumed to arise entirely from thermonuclear processes and supernova explosions in the stars. These assumptions may be suspect in the light of the evidence from low energy nuclear reactions. Widom and Larsen remark: “It appears entirely possible that ultralow momentum neutron absorption may have an important role to play in the nuclear abundances not only in chemical cells but also in our local solar system and galaxy.”

The story of our universe has been created may well have to be rewritten.
